Plan++ Quick Start

This post describes the steps to “quick start” Plan++ in a test environment.

  1. Install Microsoft SQL Server Express
  2. Install Jedox Palo
    • Use standard port 7777 on localhost
    • Do not change the default password of the Palo admin user
  3. Install Plan++
    • Unzip Plan++ to the desired target location
    • Open the PlanPP.config file and adjust the following parameter
      • SqlServerConnectionString: enter the connection string to the SQL Server, it is essential that the connecting user has administrative rights. Plan++ creates a database on the SQL Server on startup.
    • Make sure that the Windows firewall does not block connections to port 7777 and 8080
  4. Start Palo
  5. Start Plan++
    • Make sure that both SQL Server and Palo are running before you startup Plan++
    • Open a command prompt, move to the target directory of Plan++ and start PlanPP.exe
  6. Open a browser and type http://localhost:8080 in the address bar
  7. Login with username admin and password admin
  8. Add a domain (a domain corresponds to a database in Palo)
    • Click on Domains → Add
    • Enter TestDomain as name and click on Save
  9. Switch from System domain to TestDomain in the top menu bar
  10. Add dimensions
    • Click on Dimensions → Add
    • Enter Products as name
    • Switch to the Members tab and click on Add
    • Add 4 members
    • Switch to the Treeview tab at the bottom
    • Select members CocaCola, Fanta and Sprite and drag & drop them on Total
    • Click on Save
    • Add a second dimension called Periods, the final result should look like this
    • Add a third dimension called Accounts, the final result should look like this
  11. Add a cube
    • Click on Cubes → Add
    • Enter BudgetCube as name
    • Switch to the Dimensions tab and assign the Accounts, Periods and Products dimension
    • Click on Save
  12. Add a workbook
    • Click on Workbooks → Add
    • Enter ProductPlanning as name
    • Switch to the Layout tab and enter the following formulas
      • C3: =PSELECT(“Products”;”Total”;”IDESC”;TRUE)
      • C6: =PMEMBER(“Accounts”;”ProfitLoss”;”IDESC”;”NOFILTER”;”NOFILTER”;”ROW”)
      • D5: =PMEMBER(“Periods”;”YearTotal”;”IDESC”;”NOFILTER”;”NOFILTER”;”COL”)
      • D6: =PCELL(“BudgetCube”;$C6;D$5;$C$3)
    • The final result should look like this
    • Click on Save
  13. Open the workbook
    • Click on Workbooks → ProductPlanningOpen
    • Enter some number values and click on Save

Congratulations! You have created your first planning application with Plan++! 🙂
